ACECH February 2024 President’s Message

Happy Engineers Week!

Join us for the many activities and help promote our great industry during EWeek, February 18 – 24. We are kicking off the week with a showcase of Science, Engineering, Math, and Technology at Windward Mall on Monday, February 19.  We will close the week with the Annual Engineers Awards on Saturday, February 24 at the Koolau Ballrooms. For more information, visit the February issue of Wiliki O Hawai‘i.

ACECH kicked off EWeek with a great GMM at the Japanese Cultural Center on February 14.  Presenting her recent research on the Study of Shoreline Regulations and Managed Retreat for Hawai’i: A Cost Analysis for Paumalu, O’ahu, Rachael Han of SSFM International, shared about Hawaii’s sea level rise (SLR) response.  Additionally, Rachel reviewed our shoreline regulations, and identified SLR adaptation options and mechanisms to implement managed retreat of coastal development. It was an informative presentation on the impacts and challenges Hawai‘i faces with sea level rise and the need for active discussion and planning for the future.

Mark your calendars for our next GMM on March 13 at the Japanese Cultural Center. During our breakfast meeting, Cassie Idehara and Antonia Agbannawag of Rider Levett Bucknall will be presenting The Rising Tide: Challenges and Opportunities in Hawai‘i’s Robust Market. Their presentation will cover the Economic Picture in Hawaii & U.S., Construction Cost Drivers, Escalation Trends and Projections, and Keeping Our Eyes on the Horizon. Click here for more information.

The Emerging Leaders Program Cohort #5 kicked off its program on February 8 at the Entrepreneurs Sandbox in Kakaako. 18 new future leaders from around our state began their journey with a guest panel comprised of leaders from our industry including Sheryl Nojima and Shannon Holman of our member firms Gray, Hong, Nojima & Assoc. and Orion Engineers & Assoc. respectively.  We look forward to learning about the numerous learning and leadership opportunities for Cohort #5.

All are encouraged to celebrate the many engineering achievements from a few of our member firms at the 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet. The event will be held at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i in the Generations Ballroom on March 16, 2024. This year, ACECH will be honoring four great projects from across our state:

Punaluu Stream Restoration Project – AECOM

Ala Moana Regional Park – Pedestrian Bridge, Canal Wall, and Pond Improvements – Bowers + Kubota Consulting, Inc.

Waiahole Potable Water System Emergency Repairs – Okahara and Associates, Inc.
